2008 Dog Walk a huge success!!!
It was a chilly, grey day, but that didn't stop our supporters and their dogs from coming to St. Lambert Seaway Park on September 7th to take part in our annual Dog Walk. We had a great day with Coeur Canin doing some freestyle doggie dancing, delicious Dominos Pizza for lunch, Reverend Mackay blessing pets (and even people too!), and of course, everyone participated in our 2.5 km walk.
In all, over $30,000 was raised to help the animals at our shelter. Thank you to our organizer, Angela Hunter, whom, without her, this event would not have been possible. Also, a heartfelt thank you to our dedicated volunteers who woke up before dawn to help set up the park and gave up their whole Sunday to make our Dog Walk a great, fun-filled day! And last, but certainly not least, our sponsors who donated prizes for our most deserving supporters who worked hard to raise money for the SPCA Monteregie. See you all next year!

Annual Dog Walk is approaching quickly!!
If you haven't picked up a pledge form for our annual Dog Walk that takes place in St. Lambert's Seaway Park every year, then hop to it so you can start collecting pledges in order to win one of our great prizes! Via Rail has graciously donated two train tickets to Toronto as one of our top prizes. As usual, we also have great stuff at our raffle tables, our Wheel of Fortune, as well as some fun gifts for our contest winners. Domino's Pizza will be there with some piping hot slices for lunch and ice-cold drinks will be available all day long. SPCA Monteregie dogs will be the star attractions as they arrive to strut their stuff as they look for potential adoptive families. We'll also have some 'Dancing with dogs' demos, as well as many different kiosks for you to visit during this great day.
So mark your calendars for Sunday, September 7th - you won't want to miss this fun day with your dog!!

Ducki finds a home - in paradise!!
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Richard Allan at the Fauna Foundation for taking in our beautiful little 'Ducki'. Ducki was part of a seizure we did last year when we investigated some very neglected farm animals. After a long stay at our shelter, we thought it was time Ducki found some feathered friends of his own. When we put Ducki in the magnificent pond at the Fauna sanctuary, he didn't seem to know what to do at first, but then instinct took over and he started splashing and flapping his little ducki wings in the water - then, a little awkwardly at first, he started to swim. What a lucky little Ducki he is - he truly is in paradise!!

Busy, Busy Spring
Well, it's been a very busy spring at the shelter, so many new arrivals and not enough adoptions. Spring is usually a quiet time for dog adoptions; most people are busy working around the yard getting ready for the summer months ahead or leaving for their chalets on the weekends. Which brings us to the problem of our over-flow of cats and dogs at our shelter. Now is a great time to adopt a dog or cat - there's lots to choose from!!

Blainville Fox Terrier case
Finally, some GOOD news for once! Laporte, the guy who was breeding Fox Terriers in his house in Blainville, was sentenced yesterday for animal cruelty.
Laporte got a $2000 fine, 200 hours community service, and three years probation during which he is not allowed to own a dog.
Best of all - the red collar dogs are safe (these were the dogs he tagged when they were being taken away and he said he loved them sooo much, he wanted them back!). He will not get the dogs back & if he even tries to contact the foster families, he will be arrested.
Hopefully, other judges will use this case when deciding on sentencing criminals in animal cruelty - may this case set an example!

Annual Booksale a Great Success
Once again, our annual booksale was a great success, raising over $1800! A special thank you to Patricia Geary and Angela Hunter for their hard work organizing this event as well as the many volunteers who helped pack, organize, unpack, carry, and give up their weekend all to raise money for the SPCA Monteregie's animals!!
Hmm, let's see, shall we start organizing NEXT year's booksale now, or should we wait a little??
